Hospital Clínico Universitario De Santiago: Nutrición Pediátrica

Internship Overview
This paper reflects on my pediatric nutrition internship in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where I examined the growing public health crisis of childhood obesity. The work combines a literature review on nutritional trends with first-hand observations of how modern lifestyles are shifting away from the traditional Mediterranean diet toward ultra-processed foods. During my time in the clinic and local schools, I saw how social and economic factors directly impact a child's health outcomes and their access to nutritious options.
By working closely with families and healthcare professionals, I realized that effectively addressing health disparities requires more than just providing data; it requires clear, accessible communication and a supportive environment. My contributions and experiences included:
-
Conducting clinical assessments by measuring height, weight, and blood pressure to monitor pediatric growth.
-
Implementing educational workshops in schools to help students identify healthy habits and fill gaps in nutritional knowledge.
-
Collaborating on family consultations to provide practical advice on meal planning and portion control.
-
Evaluating lifestyle data through extensive student questionnaires to better understand local levels of physical activity and food consumption.
-
Advocating for early intervention as a primary strategy to reduce the long-term risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension.
