This artifact is a research paper I completed for Determinants of Health Behavior that focused on childhood nutrition. The purpose of the assignment was to understand how parents, schools, communities, and public policies influence children’s eating habits. In the paper, I examined how environmental and social factors shape long-term nutrition outcomes for children. This project was meaningful because it helped me realize that childhood nutrition is not just about personal decisions. I learned how public health theories connect to real behaviors and health outcomes. One challenge was going through so many sources and figuring out what information mattered most. I addressed this by organizing the paper clearly and focusing on patterns across studies. This experience strengthened my research skills and prepared me to address nutrition disparities and promote healthier communities in future public health work.

This artifact is a group presentation I worked on for my Women’s Health course that focused on maternal mortality in South Sudan. The purpose of the assignment was to explore women’s health issues while considering social, cultural, and economic barriers to care. My role included evaluating how poverty, conflict, and limited access to healthcare affect maternal outcomes in Maternal Mortality in South Sudan. This artifact taught me how health outcomes are connected to the social determinants, not just individual choices. I learned how unstable health infrastructure and limited education can increase risks during pregnancy and childbirth. One challenge was discussing cultural practices respectfully while also identifying realistic solutions for a country with limited resources. I addressed this by using credible sources and focusing on community-based approaches. This project helped prepare me to work in public health by teaching me how to approach women’s health issues with empathy, cultural awareness, and evidence-based thinking.
